Links I like
The following are my favorite sites. This is a page-in-progress. Please recommend any links below in the comment section.
MOVIES
- Box Office Mojo: Thorough and detailed information on movies’ box office performance.
- IMDB: Internet Movie Database. If you don’t know this site, and if you ever watch movies, go there right now.
- The Numbers: Similar to Box Office Mojo but keeps compares information in number of tickets sold, to account for ticket price inflation. Also has a lot of information regarding DVD sales.
TELEVISION
- Nielsen Media & Entertainment Blog: Nielsen’s wire blog covering ratings, box office and other information in relation to media and entertainment.
- The Numbers: Similar to Box Office Mojo, this site focuses on movies, but also includes DVD sales as well as box office results.
- TV Bureau of Advertising: Extremely informative site about broadcast and local television. A wealth of market information: Ratings, DMA rankings, HH trends, DVR penetration, etc.
- TV By The Numbers: An excellent site covering and analyzing the U.S. television industry, mostly from a ratings and programming standpoint. Very active community present in comments.
DIGITAL
- Engadget: Consumer electronic products blog. I love to peak and see how screens are evolving and proliferating.
- TechCrunch: “Profiles startup companies, products and websites” but it seems that it’s expanded somewhat further than that.
MEDIA INDUSTRY
- Cynopsis: Probably the best media e-newsletter service I’ve tried. Always cover the major stories in a succinct, professional yet also personable manner. Television, digital and “kids” daily editions available.
- I Want Media: Comprehensive media news portal site, posting the latest daily catch across all industries.
- LatinVision Blog: Hispanic media focused blog run by LatinVision, small company that operates business portals targeting U.S. Hispanic and Latin American entrepreneurs and executives in small and medium sized companies.
- MediaPost: Excellent site that provides good coverage of media stories and events.
- Media Decoder: The New York Times’ blog focused on the media industry.
JOURNALISM AND NEWS
- Columbia Journalism Review: Check out “The Audit” section which critiques a certain piece or particular coverage.
- The Economist: Imperfect, but my standby news source especially regarding context. Insightful commentaries by readers.
- The Daily Beast: While sometimes its coverage crosses into trashiness, it’s indispensable as a media barometer and as a quick one-stop-news-shop.
MARKETING
- Marketing Over Coffee: Great digital marketing blog and podcast hosted by John Wall and Christopher Penn. Practical and up-to-date information on the latest news and trends.
- Occam’s Razor: Insightful blog written by Avinash Kaushik, author of Web Analytics: An Hour a Day and Analytics Evangelist for Google.
- Marketing Profs
- Weisler Media: Excellent research related blog with video interviews of top industry executives.
DESIGN
- Brand New: Excellent site covering corporate and brand identity, regularly covering ‘before and after’ brand designs.
- Daily Heller: Blog written by Steven Heller, former Art Director of The New York Times. Diverse and surprising subject matter.
- Edward Tufte: Patron saint of infographics.
- PSD Tuts+: Extremely handy site with Photoshop DIY references and inspiring work. If Martha Steward did Photoshop she’d have a site like this.
